American football is a sport that has been around for almost 200 years now. It wasn't American at the beginning though, as it was first played by American students in Canada. The Canadian Football League still exists today and American football isn't American there either, but rather called "football".
The first American football team was formed by a group of Yale University students in 1872, who were required to set out rules for a new game they had taken up. This led to what we know as American football today; with all the speeding and tackling and high impact collisions everyone's familiar with. However, American football didn't become popular straight away; certain parts of America thought it too violent like what rugby is accused off nowadays (rugby originated from an American university). American football was also still being developed and only a few people played it until the early 20th century.

In 1891, American colleges started "Knute Rockne Bowls" which became a national collegiate championship a year later. In 1920 this grew into the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with professional players from all American states, not just American collegians as before.
